Thailand's weather service issues a seven-day heavy rain warning through 25 October

TMD flags flash floods and landslide risk from 19 to 25 October, with waves above 3 metres possible in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

On 19 October 2026 the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a seven-day warning for heavy to very heavy rain, valid through 25 October. For travellers who planned a week of beaches, viewpoints and road trips, it is worth reading the details before heading out.

The first rain is expected in the South and the East on 19 and 20 October. From 21 October it is forecast to spread to the lower Northeast, the Central region including Bangkok and nearby provinces, the East and the upper South.

TMD links the pattern to a monsoon trough lying over southern Thailand, combined with the southwest monsoon. Later in the week a cool air mass from China moves in. The department flags flash floods, landslides, forest run-off and strong gusts in isolated spots. It asks people to take particular care on foothills near waterways and in low-lying areas, and to avoid roads that often flood.

The sea may be rough as well. Waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand could exceed 3 metres in areas with thunderstorms, and boat operators are advised to be cautious. Anyone with a ferry, speedboat or island tour booked this week should check directly with the operator.

TMD said its next announcement would come at 5pm on 19 October. Updates are also available by phone on 02-399-4012, 02-399-4013 or 1182.

For visitors who rent a scooter or a car, the practical side is simple. Wet asphalt means longer braking distances, and a route that is dry in the morning can be under water by the afternoon. Shorter hops, earlier starts, a pause while a storm cell passes and a detour around known flood spots all help. The local owner who hands over the keys usually knows which roads to skip, so it is worth asking.

This is also the kind of week when clear rental terms matter. Balm Rentals is a marketplace for bikes, scooters and cars that shows the price, deposit and conditions before you pay, in the traveller's own language, with verified local owners, in one app for iOS and Android. We see it as a companion to the local rental community: it makes the first conversation easier, and the owners' knowledge of their own roads does the rest.

Before each day's ride, check the latest TMD forecast, keep the plan flexible and leave extra time. A rain-shortened itinerary still leaves most of Thailand to enjoy once the skies clear.
