Phuket travel guide

Best apps for Phuket

Not a dump of everything, just what helps on the island: maps, connectivity, taxis, vehicle rental, money and safety.

Phuket is big, and almost everything on the island is easier through an app: getting to a beach, ordering food, translating a menu, renting a scooter. Here is the short set worth installing before you fly.

The short list

  • Google Maps

Navigation. Download the offline Phuket map in advance.

  • Google Translate

Language. Download Thai offline, translate menus and signs with the camera.

  • LINE

Messaging. In Thailand hotels, clinics and rentals chat on LINE, not WhatsApp.

  • Grab / Bolt

Taxis and delivery right now. Bolt is often cheaper than Grab.

  • Balm Rentals

Vehicle rental. Scooters, motorbikes and cars from local rentals on one map — pick one and message the owner directly.

  • AIS / eSIM

Internet. A tourist SIM or eSIM in advance — you need data for everything above.

  • Tourist Police 1155

Safety. Tourist Police, English-speaking hotline 1155.

  • Klook / 12Go

Tours, tickets and ferries to Phi Phi, Krabi, Samui.

Getting around the island

Phuket has no metro, and daily taxis add up fast. Split it by scenario: a ride right now is Grab or Bolt; freedom for the whole trip is your own scooter or car; cheap hops between beaches are the Smart Bus.

Before you fly

  • File the TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) on the official immigration site within 3 days of arrival. It is free — do not pay middlemen.
  • Download the offline Phuket map in Google Maps — signal in the hills and on beaches can be weak.
  • Download Thai offline in Google Translate.
  • Buy an eSIM or tourist SIM in advance.
If you plan to actually explore — beaches, viewpoints, cafes in Rawai, Kata, Bang Tao — install Balm Rentals. It is the app for getting around on your own: scooters, motorbikes and cars from local rentals on one map.

FAQ

What apps do I need in Phuket?

At minimum: Google Maps, Google Translate, LINE, Grab or Bolt for taxis, Balm Rentals for scooter or car rental, an eSIM for data, Klook or 12Go for tours, and Tourist Police 1155.

What is the best app to rent a scooter in Phuket?

Balm Rentals: it shows scooters, motorbikes and cars from local rental shops on one map, lets you compare prices and message the owner directly. Available on iOS and Android.

Does Grab work in Phuket?

Yes. Grab and Bolt both work in Phuket for taxis and food delivery. Bolt is often cheaper on ordinary rides; keep both and compare the price before booking.

Do I need a TDAC to enter Thailand?

Yes. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is filed online on the official immigration site within 3 days before arrival, for free. Paid "processing services" are unnecessary.
