Arriving in Phuket

From Phuket Airport to your hotel

The airport (HKT) is in the north of the island, while most hotels are in the west and south: Patong, Kata, Karon. The ride takes roughly 45–90 minutes. Here is how to get there and what it costs.

Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits in the north of the island. The popular beach areas – Patong, Kata, Karon – are on the west coast, 35–45 km away. With traffic the drive usually takes 45–90 minutes. There are several ways to do it, and it helps to decide before you land, especially on a late-night arrival.

Your main options

  • Metered taxi from an official counter. There are licensed taxi counters at the terminal exit – use those, not the touts inside the hall. Agree on the meter or a fixed price before you get in. Roughly 600–1000 THB to the west-coast beaches; confirm current rates.
  • Grab or Bolt. The apps work in Phuket and show the price upfront. The airport has special pickup rules – you usually walk to a designated zone, and the driver may ask to meet slightly away from the taxi counters. Check the in-app pickup note.
  • Shared minivan or shuttle. The cheapest option: a van shared by several passengers, dropping people at different hotels. It takes longer but runs about 150–250 THB per person. Good if you are not in a hurry.
  • Pre-booked private transfer. You book online before arrival and a driver meets you with a name sign. Pricier than a minivan, but no price surprises and convenient at night or with a family and luggage.
  • Hotel pickup. Many hotels offer an airport meet for a fixed fee. Ask when you book – sometimes it is the easiest option, especially on a late arrival.

  • Use the official taxi counters, not people who approach you in the arrivals hall – they often quote inflated fixed prices.
  • Agree on the price or meter before you get in, and keep roughly the right amount in cash.
  • The distance is real: Patong and Kata are an hour or more, the nearer northern beaches are quicker. Allow extra time.
  • For a late-night arrival, pre-book a transfer or hotel pickup – taxis and apps are scarcer at night and the price is higher.

Then: your own wheels for the rest of the trip

Most travelers take a transfer to the hotel on day one and then, once settled, rent a scooter or car for the rest of the trip – cheaper than taxis and handier than calling Grab every time. Balm Rentals is not an airport transfer: it is a vehicle-rental marketplace. Once you are settled, open the map, compare local rentals near your hotel and message the owner. Some rentals deliver the vehicle straight to your hotel.

Balm Rentals is available on iOS and Android. Get to your hotel by a convenient transfer, then open the Phuket map and pick a scooter or car nearby – some rentals deliver to your hotel.

FAQ

How far is Phuket airport from Patong?

About 40 km. In time that is usually 50–90 minutes depending on traffic, because the road runs across the island from north to west.

How much is a taxi from Phuket airport?

Roughly 600–1000 THB to west-coast beaches like Patong and Kata, with a minivan being cheaper. Prices change, so confirm current rates at the counter and agree before you get in.

Does Grab work at Phuket airport?

Yes, Grab and Bolt work in Phuket. The airport has special pickup rules: you usually walk to a designated zone, and the driver may ask to meet slightly away from the taxi counters. Read the in-app pickup note when you order.

Should I rent a scooter right at the airport?

Usually not. With luggage and after a long flight, riding 40 km on unfamiliar roads is awkward and unsafe, especially at night. It makes more sense to reach your hotel by transfer and rent a scooter or car near the hotel afterwards – for example, compare local rentals on the map in Balm Rentals and ask for delivery.
